Karen M. Sandler is a lecturer at Columbia Law School and the executive director of the Software Freedom Conservancy, a nonprofit organization focused on ethical technology. An advocate for free software and free culture, she co-organizes Outreachy, an award-winning outreach program addressing under-representation, systemic bias, and discrimination in technology. Prior to her role at Software Freedom Conservancy, Karen served as the executive director of the GNOME Foundation and was the general counsel for the Software Freedom Law Center. Karen obtained her law degree from Columbia Law School, where she was a James Kent Scholar and co-founded the Columbia Science Technology Law Review. She holds a Bachelor of Science in engineering from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Among her accolades, Karen received the O’Reilly Open Source Award in 2011 for her work on behalf of software freedom and was awarded an honorary doctorate by KU Leuven in 2023.
