Biography

Karen Schuckman is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Geography at Penn State, where she teaches remote sensing and geospatial technology in online GIS programs offered by the John A. Dutton e-Education Institute. With over 15 years of teaching experience, she has developed the curriculum for the Remote Sensing Earth Observation Graduate Certificate, which includes five 3-credit courses and engages four part-time faculty members. Prior to her academic career, she worked as a geospatial technology leader at URS, supporting FEMA projects related to disaster response and recovery following Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. Schuckman also held various senior positions at EarthData from 1995 to 2005, where she led significant projects including lidar acquisition for the North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Program and numerous transportation mapping initiatives. She served on the NOAA Advisory Committee for Commercial Remote Sensing and has been an active consultant in her field. Schuckman holds an M.S. in Geospatial Information Systems from Penn State and is certified as a Photogrammetrist and Mapping Scientist in Lidar by ASPRS, as well as being a Professional Land Surveyor.
