Dr. Karen Skinazi

Biography

Karen Skinazi is an Associate Professor at the University of Bristol, specializing in interdisciplinary studies focused on late 19th to 21st-century Jewish, multiethnic, and American women’s literature and culture. She authored the monograph Women Valor: Orthodox Jewish Troll Fighters, Crime Writers, Rock Stars, published by Rutgers University Press in 2018, which examines representations of Orthodox Jewish women in contemporary literature. Skinazi has contributed significantly to Jewish Studies and co-edited a special issue of Shofar on art and feminism related to Orthodox Haredi women. She has published widely in various academic journals and has been awarded several prizes for her work, including an Honourable Mention for the Robert K. Martin/Canadian Association of American Studies Book Prize. Her research interests extend to examining the lives and representation of Muslim and Jewish women in literature and activism. Having convened multiple academic units within the Liberal Arts program at Bristol, she teaches courses on American revolutions and interdisciplinary approaches to literature. Skinazi is engaged in various editorial roles and has been a panelist for prestigious awards in her field. Her dedication to popularizing her research is evident in her contributions to Jewish cultural media, radio interviews, and various writing venues. Outside her academic duties, she hosted celebrated author Tracy Chevalier and has provided editorial services for academic journals.
