Dr. Karen Thole

Biography

Karen Thole is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan. She has dedicated her career to research and education in mechanical engineering, particularly focusing on convective heat transfer, turbulent boundary layers, high freestream turbulence, and gas turbine heat transfer. Dr. Thole obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois and later earned her PhD from the University of Texas. Throughout her career, she has received numerous awards recognizing her contributions to engineering education and research, including the University of Texas Distinguished Engineering Graduate award and being named a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Dr. Thole has also been honored with various prestigious awards such as the Outstanding Engineering Educator Award and the George Westinghouse Gold Medal from ASME. She is actively involved in mentoring the next generation of engineers, holding various positions and participating in committees focused on engineering education and diversity in the field.
