Karen E. Willcox is the Director of the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, where she holds the W. “Tex” Moncrief, Jr. Chair in Simulation-Based Engineering Sciences and the Peter O'Donnell, Jr. Centennial Chair in Computing Systems. Before joining the Oden Institute in 2018, Willcox spent 17 years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). At MIT, she served as a Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics and was a founding Co-Director of the MIT Center for Computational Engineering. In addition, she held the position of Associate Head of the MIT Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Her research focuses on developing scalable computational methods for the design of next-generation engineered systems, with particular attention to model reduction techniques that provide principled approximations based on data and multi-fidelity formulations that leverage various sources of uncertain information. These methods have been widely applied in aircraft system design and in environmental policy decision-making.
