Biography

Karen Winey is the Harold Pender Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Prior to her current position, she joined the Penn Engineering faculty after a brief postdoctoral tenure at AT&T Bell Labs. Winey has made significant contributions to the field of polymer science, with a focus on understanding and manipulating unique polymer nanocomposites and ion-containing polymers. She has a strong record of service, having served as Associate Editor for Macromolecules and as Chair of the Division of Polymer Physics at the American Physical Society. Winey's research interests include the hierarchical nanoscale morphologies of polymers and their relationship to mechanical and thermal transport properties. Her group employs a range of experimental and computational tools, including X-ray scattering and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, to study advanced polymers. Her current projects target energy-related applications and explore polymer-to-polymer upcycling. Winey is a highly-cited researcher funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy, among other agencies.
