Biography

Karienn de Souza is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics at Texas A&M University. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Texas A&M University in 2006, followed by a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Florida School of Medicine in 2012. Subsequently, she completed her postdoctoral training at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas A&M Health Science Center, focusing on neurobiological research and cognitive health. Her research interests include the utilization of optogenetic mouse models to study presynaptic mechanisms related to pathology during the early presymptomatic stages of cognitive impairment, as well as exploring the role of the immune system and inflammation in normal cognitive aging. She is also investigating cognitive functional outcomes in relation to sleep-wake cycle disturbances and the gut-brain axis in aging. Throughout her career, she has been recognized for her contribution to research with various awards in scientific excellence.
