Professor Dr. Karim El Basyouny

Biography

Dr. Karim El-Basyouny is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta. He holds an endowed chair position as the City of Edmonton Urban Traffic Safety Research Chair. He has a solid academic foundation, earning a Doctorate in Philosophy with a specialization in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 2011. His research focuses on transportation engineering, particularly in improving road safety and understanding the impacts of various factors such as speed limits and infrastructure digitization on road user safety. Over the past decade, he has made significant contributions to the field, informing public policy through his research on traffic safety and management. He actively participates in numerous safety committees at both national and international levels and serves on editorial boards for prestigious journals. His work integrates advanced statistical modeling and machine learning techniques to develop innovative solutions for contemporary traffic challenges, especially concerning automated enforcement systems and the application of Intelligent Transportation Systems.
