Biography

Karin Alt has had a distinguished career in Classical Philology, specializing in Greek and Latin Philology. She studied at the universities of Tübingen, Freiburg, and Frankfurt, where she completed her doctorate under Karl Reinhardt with a dissertation on the chorus in Euripides in 1953. Alt became an assessor in 1955 and joined the Freie Universität Berlin in 1958, where she achieved habilitation in 1970 and became a professor in 1971. Despite retiring in 1993, she continued to teach. Her research interests include Greek tragedy and the philosophy of Plato, as well as Middle and Neoplatonism. Among her significant publications are analyses of Euripides, philosophical myths of the Greeks, and studies on the conceptualization of the soul and its implications within Plato's works and later Platonists. Alt has contributed extensively to discussions on the interplay between Greek philosophy and later traditions, reflecting her deep engagement with ancient texts and their interpretations.
