Biography

Karin Bauer is a Professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures, Cultures at McGill University. Her research interests include German Studies, memory studies, critical theory with a focus on the Frankfurt School, exile migration, gender studies, and contemporary German-language literature. She has published extensively on various authors including Herta Müller, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Jürgen Habermas. Bauer has also served as the editor of 'Seminar: A Journal in Germanic Studies' and has chaired the Department of German Studies. She was the president of the Canadian Association of University Teachers of German from 2002 to 2004. Bauer is recognized for her exceptional contributions, receiving the Hermann Boeschenstein Medal in 2021. Her current SSHRC-funded project explores the concept of literary publics through the lenses of performance, interaction, and participation.
