Dr. Karin Bijsterveld

Biography

Karin Bijsterveld is a historian and professor of Science, Technology, and Modern Culture at Maastricht University. Her work focuses on the cultural history of sound and the sociology of science and technology. Bijsterveld has published extensively on various topics including the relationship between technology and culture, and the role of sound in society. Her notable publications include 'Mechanical Sound: Technology, Culture, and Public Problems of Noise in the Twentieth Century' and co-edited volumes such as 'Sound Souvenirs: Audio Technologies, Memory, and Cultural Practices' and 'The Oxford Handbook of Sound Studies'. She has been involved in several funded research projects and has served as a visiting scholar at esteemed institutions such as the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. Bijsterveld is a member of several academic societies including the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and has held leadership roles within various academic programs at Maastricht University.
