Dr. Karin Bijsterveld

Biography

Karin Bijsterveld is a historian and professor at Maastricht University focusing on Science, Technology, and Modern Culture. Her work addresses the cultural history of sound and the interplay between technology and society. She is widely published in the fields of Contemporary History, Science and Technology Studies, and Sound Studies. Some of her notable works include 'Mechanical Sound: Technology, Culture, and Public Problems of Noise in the Twentieth Century' and co-edited volumes such as 'Sound Souvenirs: Audio Technologies, Memory and Cultural Practices' and 'Oxford Handbook of Sound Studies'. Bijsterveld has led significant research initiatives, including NWO-funded projects, and has served on various academic boards and institutions, including the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. She was a visiting scholar at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and a fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study. Bijsterveld is also a founding member of the European Sound Studies Association and remains active in advancing the field of Sound Studies. Her research and teaching aim to illuminate the complexities of sound within cultural contexts and technological frameworks.
