Biography

Karin Gludovatz specializes in the history of art with a focus on the visual and material culture of the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern period (14th to 18th centuries). She studied Art History along with Classical Archaeology and Sociology at the University of Vienna and the University of Hamburg. Gludovatz has an extensive academic background, including her role as a research assistant at the Institute for Art History at the University of Vienna and her doctoral studies at the University of the Arts Berlin. She obtained her PhD from the University of Vienna in 2004 with the dissertation 'Leaving Traces - Reading Signs: The Artist's Signature as Poetic Reference'. Over the years, she has held various positions including Junior Professor and has been a Professor for Modern European Art History at the Free University of Berlin since 2012. Gludovatz's research interests include the materiality and mediality of late medieval manuscripts, theories of the still life, and the artist's mobility during the Early Modern period. She has been involved in numerous research projects and has contributed to interdisciplinary studies focusing on gender and diversity as well as the role of art in colonial contexts.
