Biography

Karin Knorr Cetina is the O. Borchert Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Vienna in 1971 and later obtained a post-doctoral diploma from the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna in 1972. Knorr Cetina achieved her Habilitation at the University of Bielefeld in 1981. Her research interests focus on economic sociology, science, consumption, globalization, and qualitative methods. She utilizes a microsociological perspective to study the intricate relationships between financial markets, knowledge systems, and cultural theory. Her current projects include researching global foreign exchange markets and their cultural implications, as well as the study of social and technological knowledge production in the life sciences and particle physics. She mentors doctoral students who explore the intersections of finance, technology, and societal structures through ethnographic research, contributing significantly to the understanding of modern economic frameworks and their cultural dimensions.
