Dr. Karin Schwiter

Biography

Karin Schwiter is an Assistant Professor focusing on Labour Geography at the University of Zurich since August 1, 2021. She completed her doctorate in 2010 at the Centre for Gender Studies at the University of Basel, where her research examined the life plans of young adults amidst the conflict between individuality and gender norms. Following her doctoral studies, she conducted postdoctoral research under the National Research Programme 60, investigating the enduring patterns of gender segregation in educational and professional careers in Switzerland. From 2013 to 2021, Schwiter led the research group 'Work, Migration Gender' at the Chair of Economic Geography at the University of Zurich. She has spent time as a visiting scholar at the University of Washington and held visiting professorships at the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto. Her current research delves into understanding inequalities within labour markets, particularly focusing on precarious segments such as cleaning and care work in private households. Recently, she has explored the implications of digital transformation on the world of work, analyzing how digital employment platforms alter the working and living realities of platform employees. Throughout her career, Schwiter has received several awards for her research contributions, including the Area Prize from the Royal Geographic Society in 2012 and the Swiss Prize for Education Research in 2016, presented by the President of the Swiss Confederation.
