Biography

Karin Wårdell is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Linköping University and the research leader of the Neuroengineering group. She obtained her Master's degree in Technical Physics and Electrical Engineering in 1987 and completed her PhD in 1994, specializing in Biomedical Instrumentation. Wårdell’s research interests focus on neuroengineering and biomedical instrumentation, emphasizing neuroimaging methods, biomedical optics, modeling, and simulation of brain microcirculation. Her work includes translational research and clinical studies, particularly in the areas of deep brain stimulation (DBS) and optical guidance in neurosurgery, contributing to monitoring methods in neurointensive care. Wårdell collaborates closely with clinical researchers both nationally and internationally and has been recognized as a recipient of the Otto Schmidt Award, as well as a Fellow of IAMBE and EAMBES. Since 2002, she has been a Professor at Linköping University, furthering advances in minimally invasive instrumentation techniques.
