Biography

Karina Gutierrez obtained her BSc in Biology in 2011 and her MSc in Animal Science in 2013 from Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Brazil. She completed her PhD in Animal Science at McGill University in 2019 and underwent postdoctoral training in Animal Science prior to joining the Department of Animal Science at McGill University as an Assistant Professor (Research) in February 2023. In her position, she collaborates closely with professors within the Department of Animal Science and the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience. Her research focuses on gene editing, examining gene function during embryo development and creating biomedical animal models. She has experience working with both mouse models and large animals, including pigs, cows, and non-human primates. Her primary research interests include improving genome editing efficiency in embryos using the CRISPR/Cas system and understanding the roles of specific genes in early embryo development. She is also involved in creating gene-edited embryos in live animals to study the pathophysiology of diseases.
