Karl-Dimiter Bissig is the Chen Family Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Biomedical Engineering at Duke University. His research group focuses on diseases of the liver, including viral hepatitis, metabolic liver disorders, and liver cancer. They specialize in human liver chimeric mice, which are created as xenograft models for metabolic liver disease and novel patient-derived cancer models. Bissig's lab utilizes humanized mouse models to develop new therapeutic approaches, particularly involving metabolic pathway reprogramming and CRISPR-based gene therapy. His education includes an MD/PhD from the University of Bern in Switzerland, completed in 2000. After finishing his residency in Internal Medicine at Inselspital (Switzerland) from 2001 to 2005, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies until 2011. In addition to his research responsibilities, Bissig teaches various courses related to research in pharmacology and biomedical engineering.
