Biography

Karl Aberer works on foundations, algorithms, and infrastructures for distributed information management, peer-to-peer overlay networks, semantic interoperability, and trust management applications for scientific sensor data management. He has a particular interest in decentralized system architectures, self-organization mechanisms, and emergent structures in decentralized information systems. Karl received his PhD in mathematics in 1991 from ETH Zürich. Following his doctorate, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) at the University of California, Berkeley from 1991 to 1992. He then joined the Integrated Publication and Information Systems Institute (IPSI) in Germany, where he led the research division for Open Adaptive Information Management Systems. In 2000, he joined EPFL as a full professor and served as the director of the Swiss National Research Center Mobile Information Communication Systems (NCCR-MICS) from 2005. Karl has been a member of the editorial boards for several journals, including the VLDB Journal, ACM Transactions on Autonomous Adaptive Systems, and the World Wide Web Journal. He also consulted for the Swiss government on research and science policy and was a member of the Swiss Research Technology Council from 2003 to 2011.
