Karl F. Böhringer received a Diplom-Informatiker degree from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1990, and both master’s and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in 1993 and 1997, respectively. He was a visiting scholar at Stanford University from 1994 to 1995 and a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1996 to 1998. He joined the University of Washington in Seattle in 1998 as a Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Bioengineering, and currently serves as the Director of the Institute of Nano-Engineered Systems (NanoES). Böhringer has held visiting faculty positions at Tohoku University, Tokyo University, Kyoto University in Japan, University of São Paulo in Brazil, and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. His research interests include microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), manipulation and assembly at macro and nano scales, microfluidic systems for life sciences, and microrobotics. He has developed multi-batch self-assembling systems and massively parallel microactuator arrays for walking microrobots.
