Biography

Karl Lewis joined the Meinig School as an assistant professor in July 2020. His research interests center on understanding the interplay between mechanical cues and biological changes in musculoskeletal tissues. Trained as an engineer, Lewis views bodily systems as subsystems with a wide range of inputs and outputs. His work focuses on how mechanical forces modulate signals critical for the health of musculoskeletal cells. He employs cutting-edge intravital imaging techniques to observe cell signaling in real time, collaborating with genetically modified mice to search for proteins related to bone growth, development, and disease such as osteoporosis. His research investigates the mechanisms by which musculoskeletal cells sense acute changes in their environment, aiming to identify new targets for therapeutic interventions in musculoskeletal diseases. His laboratory will continue to develop innovative intravital imaging techniques to study mechanotransduction in musculoskeletal tissues.
