Karl Matter received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Basel in Switzerland in 1989. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University in the USA before returning to Switzerland to start an independent research programme at the University of Geneva, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation. In 2001, he moved to University College London (UCL) as a Reader in Experimental Ophthalmology and was later promoted to Professor of Cell Biology at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. His research laboratory focuses on the structure and function of epithelial and endothelial cell-cell junctions, as well as the molecular mechanisms that guide epithelial cell polarization and differentiation in health and disease. His work also addresses the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying ocular diseases such as glaucoma, diabetes, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
