Biography

Karl Riabowol is a Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, specializing in epigenetics and cancer research. His research focuses on the ING family of epigenetic regulators, which play pivotal roles in growth control, cancer development, and aging. He has published over 125 research papers, has authored numerous book chapters and reviews, and holds 10 patents related to cell cycle regulation involving the ING family. His laboratory has made significant contributions to the understanding of telomere dynamics and its implications for lifespan and cancer progression. Among his notable research accomplishments, Riabowol's team provided definitive evidence for the inheritance of telomere length through the male germ line. His active research program investigates the mechanisms that control tumor suppressor functions, overlaps of cancer and aging, and the molecular dynamics that lead to cellular senescence and immortalization in cancer cells. He is deeply involved in educational initiatives, teaching several advanced courses related to molecular and cellular biology, aging, and cancer.
