Biography

Karl Staples is a Professor of Respiratory Immunology and Pharmacology at the University of Southampton, where he also serves as Associate Dean for Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise within the Faculty of Medicine. His research primarily focuses on the host-pathogen interactions that contribute to chronic inflammatory airway diseases, such as asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). He has developed novel ex vivo models to study these interactions, demonstrating how viral infections enhance inflammation associated with COPD exacerbations. His significant contributions include leading the AERIS study, which highlights the role of non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) in the airways of COPD patients and its association with exacerbation frequency. Additionally, his research has revealed how corticosteroid treatments can impair immune responses, thus influencing the pathophysiology of COPD. Alongside his research activities, he is dedicated to mentoring emerging respiratory researchers, having supervised 15 PhD students to successful completion and actively involved in training the next generation of scientists and healthcare professionals.
