Dr. Karl Stobbe

Biography

Karl Stobbe is a renowned musician and educator, serving as an Instructor at the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba. His extensive career includes participation as Concertmaster in the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, as well as guest Concertmaster roles with various orchestras across Canada. Stobbe is recognized for his rich and expressive sound, receiving acclaim in notable reviews for his performances of major compositions, including works by Mahler and Beethoven. His commitment to contemporary music is evident in his collaborations with various composers and premiers, showcasing his versatility and passion for the violin. He has also engaged in significant research on the history and mechanics of string instruments, emphasizing his deep appreciation for the craft of violin making. With a Master’s degree in Music from Indiana University, Stobbe balances his performance career with an academic focus on violin performance, having presented on the history of the violin family and organized exhibits of rare instruments. He plays a rare 1806 Nicolas Lupot violin and is dedicated to exploring extraordinary string instruments.
