Biography

Karl K Vigen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he has been a scientist since 2003. He completed his B.A. in Physics at Gustavus Adolphus College and went on to earn both his M.S. and Ph.D. in Medical Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, under the direction of Dr. Charles Mistretta, focusing on Magnetic Resonance Angiography. Vigen worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University with Dr. Kim Butts Pauly, where he developed methods for Interventional MRI. He is certified by the American Board of Medical Physics in Magnetic Resonance Imaging Physics. Vigen provides clinical MRI physics services at UW-Madison, working with multiple collaborators in areas such as Magnetic Resonance Angiography, Cardiac MRI, Intraoperative MRI, and Neuro MRI, aiming to develop, translate, and implement novel MRI methods for clinical imaging. He leads the physics component of the Quality Assurance and Quality Control program for MRI at the UW Health system and plays a key role in ensuring MRI safety. Additionally, he leads the MRI rotation for the Department of Medical Physics’ Imaging Physics Residency Program.
