Biography

Karla McManus is an art historian and visual theorist specializing in the study of photography and environmental imaginaries. Her scholarly output includes curation, publications, and presentations focusing on historic and contemporary concerns such as wildlife conservation, environmental disasters, and the anxieties of the future as visualized photographically. Recent projects feature an exploration of the history of bird photography and its impact on the twentieth-century conservation movement. Supporting her research are grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. McManus's research informs her teaching of the histories and theories of photography and art. She teaches a variety of courses at the University of Regina, including Introduction to Art History, Modern Art History, History of Photography, Canadian Art History, and Ecocritical Art History. Karla is interested in supervising undergraduate honors and graduate students in areas such as the history of photography in Canada, ecocritical art and photography, and prairie art history. She is a member of the Gail and Stephen Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian Art at Concordia University and an Affiliate Member of the Documentary Research Centre at Toronto Metropolitan University. Additionally, she sits on the Board of Directors of the Universities Art Association of Canada and serves as Prairie Representative on the Board of Blackflash Magazine.
