Biography

Karolina Hutkova is a Fellow at the London School of Economics specializing in global economic relations and trade industry during the early modern and nineteenth centuries. Her research examines the role of institutions and the political economy in fostering entrepreneurship and business activities. Hutkova's doctoral research focused on the transfer of innovative silk technologies between Piedmont, Italy, and Bengal, as well as the broader context of technology transfers from Europe to Asia in the eighteenth century. She is currently working on a monograph titled 'British Silk Connection: English East India Company’s Silk Enterprise Bengal, 1750s-1850s,' which analyzes the East India Company's business model in silk manufacturing and its evolution during the transition from mercantilist policies to laissez-faire economics in the nineteenth century. Hutkova's work contributes to a deeper understanding of the political economy and institutional frameworks that facilitated the development of the Bengal silk industry in relation to British economic policies. Her forthcoming publications include articles in 'Enterprise & Society' and a chapter in 'Threads Global Desire: Silk in the Early Modern World.'
