Biography

Karolina Skibicka is a professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, specializing in the field of Neuroscience. She leads a gut-brain communication laboratory focused on investigating the neural basis of gut-brain communication using rat models. Her research employs a wide variety of behavioral neuroscience methodologies, including behavioral, neuroanatomical, molecular, and neuropharmacological analyses, as well as optogenetics and chemogenetics. Notably, her laboratory has discovered gut/brain peptides, such as GLP-1 analogues, that target the mesolimbic system to reduce food-motivated behavior and alcohol intake reward. Dr. Skibicka has made significant contributions to understanding brain circuits that govern behaviors controlled by gut-brain communication, with a particular focus on the influence of sex and sex steroids on gut-brain circuits. She is actively involved in university strategic initiatives.
