Biography

Karthik Balakrishnan is a pediatric otolaryngologist specializing in the care of children with complex breathing, voice, and swallowing disorders. He is an expert in complex surgical reconstruction of the larynx and trachea, as well as innovative approaches to pediatric airway reconstruction and the management of vascular anomalies of the head and neck. His research interests include improving quality, safety, and value in pediatric surgical care, as well as reducing healthcare costs and optimizing the healthcare experience for patients and families. He has been twice recognized as Teacher of the Year by the otolaryngology faculty at Stanford and has actively mentored multiple fellows, residents, and medical students in their careers in otolaryngology. Balakrishnan also serves as medical director of surgical performance improvement at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and has held leadership roles in various committees focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion within Stanford Medicine. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed papers and has served as an associate editor for the Journal of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. Balakrishnan completed his medical education at Johns Hopkins University and holds a Master of Public Health degree focused on Health Services. He has also undergone advanced training in complex pediatric reconstruction and is a fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
