Professor Dr. Karthik Shankar

Biography

Karthik Shankar is a Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta, specializing in Biomedical Engineering, Microsystems, and Nanodevices. He obtained his B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras in 2000, where he was awarded the Governor’s Gold Medal for all-round excellence. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Penn State University. Joined the University of Alberta as an Assistant Professor in 2009, he received early promotion to Associate Professor in 2013 and to Full Professor in 2018. He has authored 165 papers in refereed journals and delivered numerous keynote lectures at major international conferences. His research interests include nanomaterials, organic optoelectronics, solar energy harvesting, and plasmonics, focusing on advanced applications in photocatalysis and electronic devices. He actively collaborates with international institutions, reflecting a strong emphasis on research collaborations, student internships, and joint publications. His work has significantly contributed to the fields of semiconductor heterostructures, inkjet printing of materials, and the development of novel carbon nitrides for application in photocatalysis. He has received various accolades, including the PetroCanada Young Innovator Award.
