Dr. Karthish Manthiram

Biography

Karthish Manthiram is a Bren Professor at the California Institute of Technology, specializing in Materials Science and Chemical Engineering. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Stanford University (2010) and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley (2015). His career at Caltech began with a visit in 2015-16, followed by a tenure as a Visiting Associate in 2021. He has been appointed as a Professor in 2021 and became the Bren Professor in 2025. Apart from his professorship, he is also the Executive Officer for Chemical Engineering and was recognized as a William H. Hurt Scholar in 2022. His research focuses on the development of synthetic methodologies for converting carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water into a wide range of chemicals and materials, utilizing renewable electricity. Manthiram's lab is dedicated to creating electrocatalytic materials that facilitate the molecular-level transformation of chemical bonds, enabling the selective and efficient synthesis of desired molecules at accelerated rates.
