Dr. Karthish Manthiram

Biography

Karthish Manthiram is a Bren Professor in Chemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). His research focuses on electrified organic synthesis, decarbonization chemical synthesis, electrocatalysis, and renewable energy. He earned his B.S. in 2010 from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 2015. Following his doctoral studies, he worked as a Postdoctoral Associate at Caltech from 2015 to 2016 and later served as an Assistant Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2017 to 2021 before returning to Caltech as a full professor. His laboratory is dedicated to developing synthetic paradigms that convert carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water into a wide array of chemicals and materials using renewable electricity. The lab designs tailored electrode surfaces to enable efficient direct electron transfers, enhancing the generation of biological energy carriers and facilitating the synthesis of complex molecules. He is actively involved in teaching advanced courses related to reaction engineering and electrocatalytic systems.
