Prior to joining Maastricht University, Kasper Eersels obtained a master's degree in Bio-electronics Nanotechnology from Hasselt University in 2009. After graduating, he started his PhD in the group of Professor Patrick Wagner, focusing on the development of biomimetic sensor platforms for the detection of circulating tumor cells. He successfully defended his PhD in Science in 2014 and continued his work in the field of bio-chemical sensors as a postdoctoral researcher at Hasselt University and KU Leuven. In 2017, Kasper switched to Maastricht University where he currently holds the position of assistant professor in the Sensor Engineering department, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Thomas Cleij. Dr. Eersels has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles and is a co-inventor of patent-protected thermal biosensor technology. In addition to his research, Dr. Eersels is involved in teaching at the Maastricht Science Programme. He believes in the holistic educational model at Maastricht University, which connects research and education at the undergraduate level, as essential training for the scientists of the future. He is a scientist working in the multidisciplinary field of biosensing and embraces the interdisciplinary philosophy of the Maastricht Science Programme, envisioning future developments in the field.
