Biography

Kate Bowers is an Associate Professor in the Department of Structural and Molecular Biology within the Division of Biosciences at University College London. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Biochemistry from the University of Cambridge, followed by a PhD at the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology at UCL. Her PhD research focused on membrane trafficking and the endocytic pathway, specifically examining the trafficking of CD4 simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) envelope glycoprotein. Afterward, she undertook postdoctoral training at the University of Oregon under Prof. Tom Stevens, studying molecular mechanisms of membrane trafficking in yeast, concentrating on ESCRT complexes and vacuolar ATPase. In 2005, she became a lecturer at UCL after securing a British Heart Foundation Intermediate fellowship at the Cambridge Institute of Medical Research, where she studied sodium/proton exchangers and ESCRT complexes. Her research primarily focuses on membrane trafficking and ion transporters, with particular interest in the metal ion transporter ZIP14.
