Dr. Kate Evans

Biography

Kate Evans is a Clinical Professor of Law at Duke University School of Law, where she is also the inaugural Director of the Immigrant Rights Clinic. She joined the faculty in 2019, bringing extensive experience in immigration law and policy. Previously, she directed the Immigration Litigation and Appellate Clinic at the University of Idaho College of Law and taught courses on Immigration Law and Policy. In addition to her teaching role, Evans completed a teaching fellowship at the University of Minnesota Law School’s Binger Center for New Americans, where she led significant litigation efforts, including the successful case of Mellouli v. Lynch in the U.S. Supreme Court, advocating for the rights of a refugee client facing prolonged detention. Evans has contributed to the field through scholarship published in notable law reviews, including the Minnesota Law Review and Brooklyn Law Review, along with various practitioner-oriented publications. She earned her Juris Doctor (JD) in 2009 from New York University School of Law, where she was awarded the Root-Tilden-Kern Scholarship for public interest work and was inducted into the Order of the Coif. Before her legal career, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) magna cum laude from Brown University, majoring in International Development Studies, and worked with Doctors Without Borders in New York, Guatemala, and Uganda as an advocate and administrator.
