Biography

Kate Hendry is an Honorary Associate Professor with expertise in biogeochemistry and chemical oceanography. She investigates nutrient cycling in the modern ocean, linking past climatic changes to ocean circulation and nutrient supply that drives biological productivity. Kate completed her PhD at Oxford University, where she focused on trace metal cycling in coastal Antarctic waters and was awarded the Doherty Scholarship for her work at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Over the years, she has researched stable isotopes and silicon in seawater and sediments, focusing on biogenic opal produced by diatoms and radiolarians in deep-sea sponges. Currently, she is involved in multiple projects related to silicon isotope biogeochemistry and has received an ERC starting grant for her work in the ICY-LAB, along with funding from the Royal Society. Additionally, she is part of the NERC funded Changing Arctic Ocean program, conducting field expeditions to various locations including the Southern Ocean and Equatorial Atlantic. Her research interests center around modern biogeochemical cycling and understanding past ocean processes primarily focused on biogenic opal and silicon cycling in seawater.
