Biography

Kate Mitchell is an Adjunct Lecturer at Queen's University with a strong commitment to justice and a depth of academic and professional experience in criminal and prison law. She holds a Juris Doctor and a Master's degree in Public Administration from Queen’s University, along with a Master of Laws (LLM) from UCLA, where she specialized in Criminal Justice and Prison Law. Currently, she is pursuing a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) at the University of Toronto, focusing her research on prisons and the rule of law. A Trudeau Scholar and recipient of the Canada Graduate Scholarship for Doctoral Studies, Kate was called to the Ontario Bar in 2018 and has gained valuable experience clerking at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. She has practiced criminal and prison law in Kingston, representing defendants and advocating for clients on matters concerning prison conditions and parole. Her passion for systemic reform is evident in her litigation efforts and legal advocacy work. Kate has served as part of the executive for the Canadian Prison Lawyers’ Association, contributing to the preparation of Supreme Court intervention materials and co-organizing a national conference focused on prison law.
