Biography

Kate Redburn is an associate professor of law at Columbia Law School and a legal historian with expertise in anti-discrimination law. They are the director of the Center for Gender and Sexuality Law, where their research examines the interplay of history, gender studies, and law. Redburn’s work focuses on the evolving relationship between legal doctrine, identity, and the political economy in the postwar United States. They have explored the rise of religious objections to anti-discrimination laws, as well as the transgender constitutional history and the regulation of non-normative families. Their scholarly contributions have been featured in prominent legal journals, including the Harvard Law Review, California Law Review, University of Chicago Law Review, and the Yale Law Journal. In 2025, Redburn was named an Emerging Scholar of the Year by the Yale Law Journal. Prior to their academic career, they clerked for Judge Guido Calabresi on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and helped establish the Law and Political Economy Project. Redburn is currently completing a Ph.D. in history at Yale University and has also earned a J.D. from Yale Law School, an M.A. and M.Phil. from Yale University, and a B.A. from Columbia University.
