Biography

Kate Swanson is a Professor in the Department of International Development Studies at Dalhousie University. She holds a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Guelph and a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. She researches issues of migration, asylum, and the rights of youth, focusing particularly on Latin America and the U.S./Mexico border. Her work critically examines the experiences of street children and the human rights of marginalized youth, often through field research conducted in various countries including Honduras, Mexico, and Ecuador. Swanson has published several books and articles addressing these themes, exploring topics such as indigenous rights, immigration detention, and the implications of urban policies on marginalized communities. Currently, she serves as a Canada Research Chair in International Peace and Security, advocating for youth affected by migration policies. Swanson is actively welcoming students interested in youth migration and asylum studies to join her research endeavors.
