Dr. Kate Tunstall

Biography

Kate E. Tunstall is a Professor of French at Worcester College, University of Oxford, specializing in literary history of the French Enlightenment, particularly the works of Enlightenment thinkers such as Diderot. She focuses on literary materiality and practices of anonymity and pseudonymity, exploring significant themes in the historical context of the eighteenth century. Her current writing projects include a critical study of the works of Charlotte Bourette and a major work titled 'Diderot's Dressing Gowns', investigating the editions of Diderot's 'Regrets sur ma vieille robe de chambre'. She has published several notable works such as 'Blindness and Enlightenment' and has contributed to numerous academic collections. Tunstall is significantly involved in academic collaboration and has held various editorial positions, including General Editor of the Journal of Eighteenth-Century Studies. Her educational journey began at a comprehensive school in South London, followed by a B.A. in French and German at the University of Cambridge, where she later completed her Ph.D. She continues to contribute actively to teaching, encouraging students from non-selective schools to pursue higher education in Humanities, and remains committed to widening access in academia.
