Biography

Kate Ward is a Professor of Global Musculoskeletal Health at the University of Southampton, where she directs the NIHR Global Health Nutrition Research Group. With over 20 years of experience in musculoskeletal research, including 10 years focused on Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), she has led numerous successful research programs as Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Principal Investigator (Co-I) within the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Centre. Her research interests are central to understanding global musculoskeletal health, with notable projects like the MUFASSA study, which focuses on muscle strength and functional ability in Sub-Saharan Africa. She is also leading the INPreP initiative, aimed at improving nutrition during the critical preconception period and beyond in SSA. Ward collaborates extensively with various institutions and has co-directed the Sub-Saharan Africa Musculoskeletal Network (SAMSON), which fosters collaborative research across SSA. Furthermore, she has held significant roles in various international bodies related to bone health and osteoporosis, contributing to panels and committees over several years, including as President of the Bone Research Society from 2022 and serving on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Bone Mineral Research since 2017. Her leadership in research aims to create impactful solutions to address bone health challenges in resource-poor settings.
