Biography

Kath Weston is an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the University of Edinburgh and a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Virginia. She has previously held appointments at Harvard University and Arizona State University, along with visiting professorships at the University of Cambridge, Tokyo University, Brandeis University, Wellesley College, and Olin College. Her research focuses on the integration of kinship studies with political ecology, finance, science and technology studies, historical anthropology, and identity politics. She has published several significant works, including Animate Planet: Making Visceral Sense of Living in a High-Tech, Ecologically Damaged World (Duke University Press 2017) and Traveling Light: Road America's Poor (Beacon Press 2008). Weston's research investigates how early modern European scientific inquiries into blood circulation and generation are embedded in contemporary understandings of prosperity, finance, and the creation of money. She challenges conventional explanations of economic phenomena, particularly the complexities surrounding the 2008 financial crash.
