Biography

Kath Woods-Townsend is a successful research scientist with a PhD in Human Genetics. She retrained as a secondary school teacher, consolidating her interest in science and scientific education. As the Programme Manager for LifeLab at the University of Southampton, she has played a pivotal role in shaping the development of educational programmes, leading randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effectiveness of innovative teaching methodologies. Her key objective is to engage children and adolescents in understanding science and health messages, thereby empowering them to make healthier lifestyle choices and increasing their scientific literacy and health literacy. In response to the constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Kathryn led a team to refocus the LifeLab programmes, delivering content in schools and online, while supporting the pilot phase of the Southampton Saliva Testing Programme. She has directed the development of an online CPD course and accreditation for the LifeLab materials, ensuring they meet nationally recognized standards. Her work has been recognized with several awards, including the Vice Chancellor's Award for Public Good and for Collegiality.
