Biography

Katharina M. Galor is the Hirschfeld Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Judaic Studies at Brown University, where she also serves as the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Judaic Studies program. An art historian and archaeologist trained in visual material culture, her research focuses on the Mediterranean and Near East, particularly Israel/Palestine. Galor holds B.A., M.A., and Diplôme d’Études Approfondies degrees in Art History and Archaeology from Université d’Aix-Marseille in France and a Ph.D. in Old World Art and Archaeology from Brown University. Throughout her career, she has held various academic positions at institutions including the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tufts University. Her work has received support from numerous institutions including the National Science Foundation, and she has directed significant research initiatives involving interdisciplinary collaboration. Galor has published extensively on topics such as ancient urbanism and contemporary cultural politics, with titles including "Archaeology of Jerusalem: Origins of the Ottomans," and "Finding Jerusalem: Archaeology, Science, and Ideology." Her teaching bridges archaeology and cultural history, emphasizing the intersections of religion, politics, and identity through visual material culture. Galor engages students critically and creatively, using a diverse range of sources from both ancient and contemporary contexts to explore themes of sacred space and cultural heritage.
