Biography

Katharina Natalia Piechocki is an Associate Professor in the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies at the University of British Columbia. She received her Ph.D. from New York University in 2013 and holds a Dr.phil. from the University of Vienna, Austria. Prior to joining UBC in July 2021, she taught in the Department of Comparative Literature at Harvard University for eight years. Her research focuses on early modern French Romance literature, particularly in the fields of theatre, opera, cartography, gender studies, affect studies, and translation studies. Piechocki's interdisciplinary approach encompasses canonical texts alongside lesser-studied authors, exploring how new performative art forms intersect with these disciplines. She has authored the book "Cartographic Humanism: Making Early Modern Europe" (University of Chicago Press, 2019), which examines the concept of Europe from a fresh cartographic perspective. Her current projects include a monograph titled "Procreative Poetics: Hercules Origins Opera Libretto" and several journal articles and book chapters on the intricacies of poetic creation and cultural expression in early modern literature. Piechocki is a recipient of various fellowships and grants and is actively involved in mentoring graduate students in their research pursuits.
