Dr. Katharine Dorney

Biography

Katharine Dorney is a Senior Lecturer in Theatre and Performance at the University of Manchester, specializing in the cultural history of theatre from the 20th and 21st centuries. Her research interests include the work of Black theatre artists in England, issues of visibility and marginalization in performance, as well as practices of curating, archiving, and the material culture of theatre. Dorney has co-curated an exhibition exploring the history of Black theatre in Manchester and has published on notable figures such as Black British playwright Winsome Pinnock. In her role, she supervises students interested in areas such as political theatre and feminist historiography, while also working on various projects that aim to promote Black excellence in the performing arts. Dorney's past experience includes roles at the Victoria & Albert Museum and contributions to projects that enhance access to Black-authored plays. She is committed to addressing inequality in the performing arts and often collaborates with organizations to further this aim. Dorney has been instrumental in developing exhibitions and initiatives that celebrate the contributions of marginalized groups to the arts.
