Biography

Katherine Bertoni joined the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria in April 2014. Her teaching role primarily focuses on theory and practice courses in the Master of Nursing Program, particularly the Nurse Practitioner (NP) option and the Post Diploma Program, delivered through online distance learning. Additionally, she serves as the coordinator for the Nurse Practitioner program. Prior to joining UVic, she practiced as a Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner at the Adult Diabetes Care Research Centre, Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS), where she co-facilitated curriculum revisions pertaining to diabetes management for nursing students and activities related to insulin therapy management. With extensive experience in diabetes care, she has also worked in primary health care, rural family health, oncology, palliative care, and home care for children with physical and intellectual disabilities. Currently certified as a diabetes educator, she maintains an active NP practice alongside her teaching obligations. Her research interests cover Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD), Medication Reconciliation, and Practice Guidelines for Triage of New Patients with Diabetes. Bertoni has worked on various projects, presenting her findings at the International Diabetes Federation conference and is committed to integrating a nursing philosophy that values caring, competence, ethics, and holistic practice. She emphasizes problem-based learning and encourages students to seek answers through logical reasoning.
