Biography

Katie Bouman's research focuses on computational imaging, designing systems that tightly integrate algorithms with sensor design, enabling the observation of phenomena that are difficult or impossible to measure with traditional approaches. Imaging plays a critical role in advancing science; however, as science continues to push boundaries, traditional sensors are reaching their limits. Bouman's group combines ideas from signal processing, computer vision, and machine learning with physics to uncover hidden signals that lead to scientific discovery and technological innovation. For example, in collaboration with the Event Horizon Telescope, her team is contributing to the construction of a computational earth-sized telescope that captures images of black holes and analyzes these images to deepen our understanding of general relativity in strong-field regimes.
