Biography

Katie Bouman's research focuses on computational imaging, specifically the design of systems that tightly integrate algorithms with sensor design, enabling the observation of phenomena that were previously difficult or impossible to measure using traditional approaches. Imaging plays a critical role in advancing science; however, scientific inquiry continually pushes boundaries as traditional sensors reach their limits. Bouman's group merges concepts from signal processing, computer vision, machine learning, and physics to uncover hidden signals that facilitate scientific discovery and technological innovation. For instance, in collaboration with the Event Horizon Telescope, her group is contributing to building a computational earth-sized telescope designed to capture images of black holes, analyzing these images to further our understanding of general relativity in strong-field regimes.
